Keep tape on hand for use by you or your contractor and make sure it is used on every installation. PVC and other non-metallic line should never be installed without detectable tape.
Installation: The tape should be installed in the backfill after refilling the ditch completely and allowed to settle to the desired 4 to 6" depth. The contractor may install the tape after final lifts in compaction backfilling or unroll it before final restoration of sod, black dirt and seeding, etc. These methods eliminate the "second backfill" fallacy about the tape being a second, costly installation item. Detectable tape should be installed under the supervision of the utility owner, municipality or their agents.
