| Aeration for a Healthy Pond |
| A large, crashing algae bloom in your pond or lagoon can cause low oxygen levels that lead to fish kills and odor problems. Proper aeration can help you eliminate these kinds of pond conditions. Keeping your pond aerobic (oxygen rich) encourages bacteria to flourish and feed on decomposing organic material. The increased decomposition rate of organic material on the bottom eliminates nutrients and slows plant growth. |
Aeration also helps your pond stay consistent in temperature and chemical composition (de-stratified). Daily surface fluctuations are less severe, reducing stress on fish, stimulating growth and reducing disease potential. A reduction in phosphorus may also occur, which in turn can reduce algae growth. Reduced phosphorous levels may not affect the plants and algae if it has not reached the limiting level for growth. Aeration can also cause a shift in carbon dioxide levels, which in turn can shift pH. This creates conditions where more desirable algae are likely to overpower the unwelcome blue-green algae. In some instances, simple circulation will prevent erect filamentous algae from growing in the first place. |
| Aeration is not a cure-all; it is simply one of many tools useful for algae control. It will never hurt a pond (unless you start it up and cause a turnover). Aeration almost always offers some type of water quality benefit. |
| Water color may indicate the condition of your pond or lagoon: |
- Dark sparkling green indicates high pH and DO, which is generally good. However, there is a possibility for too much algae, which may result in BOD and total suspended solids violations.
- Dull green or yellow indicates decreasing pH and DO. Blue-green algae are becoming established.
- Gray or black indicates anaerobic conditions that you must address immediately.
- Tan to brown is acceptable if caused by algae bloom, but not good if resulting from silt or dike erosion.
- Red or pink indicates the presence of purple sulfur bacteria (anaerobic conditions) or red algae (aerobic conditions). Daphnia blooms may also cause a red color. This is generally not a problem except that when they die off, there may be a large oxygen demand that can lead to anaerobic conditions.
- A milky appearance indicates the system is approaching or is septic, typically from being overloaded.
